First Time in Sri Lanka? A Complete Guide to Colombo Airport Pickup for Tourists

Welcome to Sri Lanka! Stepping off the airplane into Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA Katunayake) is the thrilling beginning of your island adventure. However, navigating a new international airport after a 10-hour flight can feel daunting if you don’t know what to expect.

This first-timer guide takes you step-by-step from disembarking the plane all the way into your private air-conditioned vehicle.

Step 1: Immigration & ETA Visa Verification

After following the arrival corridor signs, you will arrive at the main immigration hall. Make sure to have:

  • Your passport with at least 6 months validity.
  • Your approved Sri Lanka ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) printout or digital confirmation.
  • The arrival landing card (handed out on the plane or available at tables before the counters).

Step 2: Duty-Free & Luggage Collection

Once through immigration, you will pass through Sri Lanka’s uniquely famous duty-free electronics and liquor arcade. Continue straight to reach baggage carousels 1 through 6. Free airport luggage trolleys are available next to every carousel.

Step 3: Currency Exchange & Tourist SIM Cards

Before exiting into the public lobby, you will pass licensed currency exchange booths and telecom kiosks:

  • Currency Exchange: Bank of Ceylon (BOC), Commercial Bank, and Sampath Bank offer competitive rates with zero commission. ATMs accepting Visa and Mastercard are also located here.
  • Tourist SIM Cards: Dialog and Mobitel kiosks offer tourist packages (e.g., 20GB – 50GB data packages with local minutes for $10 – $15 USD). Activation takes only 3 minutes with your passport.

Step 4: Meeting Your Driver at the Arrival Lobby (Counter #05)

When you pass through the final customs green channel and enter the public Arrival Lobby, look for your chauffeur:
